Taiwanese techies HTC VIVE have begun to ride the ‘wave’ of mixed reality (MR) innovation with its Scene Mesh solution.
In a YouTube explainer posted on Thursday last week, an HTC VIVE spokesperson stated its Scene Mesh tool aimed to “seamlessly” blend the virtual and real world via the XR Elite’s headset’s depth sensor.
With it, users can detect and merge data from any external environment for a diverse number of uses ranging from gaming, design, and showcasing digitally-twinned content.
A New World, One Step at a Time
Using the device’s MR Room Setup option, the XR Elite will begin scanning and building a virtual model of the user’s environment, represented by a blanketing mosaic of interlocking triangles.
This is the XR Elite’s scene perception hard at work, building scene elements it can detect, including floors, ceilings, and desks, among others. These can then export across mixed reality apps interacting with scenic elements to merge digital content with real-world visuals.
Developed on the company’s Plane 2D and Scene Mesh features, the HTC VIVE XR Elite can embed keyboards, tables, portraits, paintings, and others via the VIVE Wave Unity-based software developer kit (SDK).
Wave Unity SDK includes the Beta version Scene Perception function, Scene Planes, Scene Mesh, Spatial Anchor, and other functionalities to deliver the XR platform’s generative capabilities.
Use of VIVE Wave requires Unity 2019 long-term support (LTS) and above to function.
HTC VIVE and Vodafone Oman’s Virtual Mash-Up
News of the spatial computing update comes after HTC VIVE partnered up with Vodafone Oman to deliver a digital twin of its physical booth at the nation’s 33rd COMEX instalment in late May.
The COMEX Global Technology Show 2024 saw the collaboration showcase highlights from bespoke digital twins of the event, which the HTC VIVE stated remained “a crucial application within the Metaverse.”
In greater detail, the company explained that people attending the conference could engage with the high-resolution virtual model of the Vodafone stand, speak and interact with others, and learn about Vodafone Oman’s latest product lineup and technological updates.
According to a blog post, HTC VIVE could launch the XR use case “in just a few weeks” from Vodafone Oman’s initial request.
Anetha Guerra, Vodafone Oman COO, said in a statement,
“Our participation underscores our commitment to driving digital transformation and economic growth in Oman, equipping enterprises with the tools they need to succeed in today’s dynamic digital landscape.”
HTC’s VIVERSE leverages a host of solutions in its technology stack like Polygon Streaming, allowing users to use the platform from any devices.
No matter if a person joins via an approved web browser, smartphone, laptop, tablet, or even headsets like the XR Elite, Focus 3 and even the rival Meta Quest 3, connectivity remains fluid and seamless across all devices to build interoperability for the XR sector.
